Blackest Night: Superman Review

by on Aug.24, 2009, under DC, Superman

Blackest_Night_Superman_by_Bakanekonei

Well me and RJ just came home from discovering the secret tribe of hot Tibetan women. But when we told them that we were unwilling to impregnate them, they chased us out using poison-tipped spears. RJ is still traumatized so I guess it will be just me making a post for now.

Blackest Night: Superman looks like it will be a good series on its own! Even without it being too tied up with the Green Lantern story (for now), the concept of Kal-L and the rest of the dead cast of Superman & Co. stands out quite well.

Much to my disappointment (just a bit) they really didn’t kill anyone major this time around. As we have found out, the Black Lanterns of Earth 1 / Sector 2814 / just Earth if you are not a geek are forming their own Justice League – who are of course EVIIIL zombies with superpowers.

I am a bit iffy at the fact though that so far, Blackest Night is seeming to be redundant. Basic plot line is as follows: Somebody dead rises and that somebody dead makes living superheroes feel bad about themselves by saying over and over where they went wrong – and they punch each others’ faces out for no apparent reason.

This is why Superman became EMO in the issue:

Lest I spoil the comic too much, I won’t reveal anything else. Overall it is a good comic and a series that commands high potential and expectations. I just hope Blackest Night will go further than the plot lines that they have been using for now – such as revealing WHAT the Black Lanterns are after, WHY they see the living as a combination of emotions and WHAT is with their power levels?

One last thing though just to spoil you if you haven’t read it, but not only did Kal-L (Earth 2 Superman) become a Black Lantern, but so did Zor-El and Earth-2 Lois Lane. YIKES! That oughta teach you to read the comic before the review!

If you are following Blackest Night, needless to say a must-read. 4/5 stars.

Tekken Movie Cast: Beyond Godlike.

by on Aug.17, 2009, under MISC, Movies, Real Life stuff

How many movies translated from comics, games, old cartoons, etc. has a cast that caters to its fans? Not many I assume.

The thing is, movie companies are always just about making PROFIT! So they go overboard in catering to the target market and thus we have an American Son Goku, a frail looking man as Eddie Brock and Ben Affleck as Daredevil.

And this is why The Tekken Movie BLOWS me away. I assumed an American would be playing Jin blah blah blah…

tekken01

And I was 50% right! He’s an American-Asian martial artist – which makes it even better! This is Jon Foo as Jin Kazama.

I was with David Nakpil when we checked out the full cast – here are the ones that got our minds blowing!

cary

Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa as Heihachi Mishima – remember the 1st Mortal Kombat movie? He was Shang Tsung. Yes he’s still buff. And yes, he’s much older than that picture now.

Blackest Night #2 & Green Lantern Corps #39

by on Aug.14, 2009, under DC, Green Lantern, WTF

I don’t find either issue as awesome as the previous ones and some of the prelude issues, but I do have this to say:

DEATH, DEATH, DEATH EVERYWHERE!!!

Comics is generally known to kill some of its characters. But Blackest Night REALLY takes it to the nth level by:

1. Killing more and more characters

2. Turning them into zombies.

3. A supposed “War of Light” of rainbow colored beings is supposed to save the universe. (THINK Power Rangers.)

Sounds like a lame concept? It sure as hell is!

But the awesome Geoff Johns MAKES. IT. WORK.

To be honest, I don’t even know where to start. I’ll start with this advice: read BACK. (No I mean REALLY read back.) Blackest Night is such a vast arc that everyone is practically tied in! To be able to connect with the various characters in their experience of death requires that the reader knows what they have been through.

This is their way of making one-series readers like me read everything else.

Which leads me to my second advice: READ WIDE. Read Batman, Superman, Titans, Red Robin, Justice League, Justice Society: EVERYTHING.

If there is one thing we know about superheroes, it is that they have an unending list of dead relatives and friends. And oh yeah, THEY DIE. There are a lot of Black Rings to go around – so I repeat: READ EVERYTHING.

As for my review I guess that is pretty much it! – There is NO WAY I see that I can make a review without spoiling anything except by saying DEATH IS EVERYWHERE.

One last thing: if you think the ending of Blackest Night #1 was awesome? Check out Blackest Night #2‘s ending. (Super Scary) 4.5/5 stars.

One uber last thing: Green Lantern Corps #39 was well written, but 70% of the important details in it are things that have either been revealed or are assumed. 3.5/5 stars.

MCC: Imagine Nation brings HOPE

Imagine…

A Comic Con without a lot of comics…

Imagine…

Tons of bad program management laced with even worse cosplaying… (I’m only homophobic in cosplay events.)

But at the center of it all, stood a humble post with a couple of bubbly people – Milch & Lawrence. They were just quietly doing their thing – attending to curious customers, being annoyed at me because I couldn’t afford anything, etc.

Unknowingly, they brought us HOPE.

In two ways:

DSC00614-

1. They had a statue of the Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) in the middle! In my humble opinion, there were too many Anime-holics whereas characters like Hal should have been in the limelight.

I mean seriously, its either we don’t have enough true comic fans, or they get scared away because of things like this:

DSC00610-

SERIOUSLY. These characters aren’t even in Manga. (among other reasons)

DSC00611-

2. I AM NINOY.

Ok this is the much more serious part.

23 years ago, Senator Ninoy Aquino died a hero.

A few days ago we saw the death his wife, Former President Corazon Aquino.

Common factor? HOPE.

Imagine Nation Studios brings to life via these sculptures the heroes we know and love.

Well this will be basically unpaid advertising, but if you want to obtain / have custom-made / take a look at / bother the people who make these things, go to their multiply here.

Just how much do GL fans await the movie?

by on Aug.06, 2009, under DC, Green Lantern, Movies

Green Lantern fans await the movie a hell lot… So much that a couple of fan made trailers were made:

DC is going to have to do a good job to keep up with the HYPE!
