Remember the first time you started reading a really good comic book? Remember those days when you were nothing more than a newbie in the wonderful world of comic books? We want to recapture that feeling with Noob Reviews. We’re going to get classic, legendary runs and put them in the hands of comic book newbies, and tell us what they think of those stories.
Welcome true believers! Ren here.
I’ve been asked to do a quick review for Batman: Year One after being threatened of castration. I’m part of the generation that grew up watching Adam West’s version of Batman, that campy show with the BIFF, POW, and KAPOW effects on the screen when the fight scenes come up, with those unforgettable lines like “Holy irrational batman!” Fast forward a few years later I went on to watch Batman: The Animated Series, which was darker and more mature than the previous live-action show. So that sums background on what I know about Batman.
So Ade suggested/threatened me to read Batman: Year One, which heavily influenced Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight movie trilogy, which has been a good watch for me. Here you get to see the struggles of Bruce Wayne in his starting days as Batman, his thought process as he goes about saving the shit out of people and putting fear into the heart of villains in Gotham.
I really liked as they were able to depict Bruce’s struggles as he studies the criminal that lurks Gotham’s streets. As he moves on to create his ever famous persona of Batman, his methods and thoughts as he goes out fighting not only criminals but also Gotham’s corrupted.
But the hidden gem for me is the inside looks in the life of James Gordon, which I really like. His struggles in a corrupt city, some of the movie iterations of his character usually shows someone who is near that red phone or the bat signal, here you can see him kick ASS.

With Jim Gordon you get to see the other side of the fight against criminals this time as a policeman trapped with his struggles on fighting the crime in Gotham while pressured and by the corrupt waiting for him to crack under the pressure.
The only downside I can probably point out is that the frames are pretty static, but I can’t really complain much since it is from 1987, but other than that the coloring is pretty solid. Other than such a minor detail you still can’t help but continue on reading.

The verdict – Batman: Year One is worth the read, I couldn’t help but reading it everything and just leaving me with wanting more! I can’t wait to downl—I mean buy the DVD to watch it animated!
