The Yin And The Yang

by Francis Cabal on Jul.13, 2010, under Comicpeoples

Welcome back! Don't forget to subscribe to the Comicgasm RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

First off, I would like to say hello. The name is Francis Cabal, and I am the new writer for Comicgasm. I shall specialize in writing articles about the comics outside of “The Big 2″. I shall write about independent comic books, lesser-known graphic novels, and other comic books that exist in the fringes of the industry. Don’t worry, I have the credibility to back it up. I am also an aspiring comic book writer, part-time drinker, full-time smoker, and professional slacker.

It truly is an honor, being asked to join the Comicgasm staff. Then of course, Ade is my friend and I’m into comics, so this doesn’t really come as a big surprise. Sadly, the proverbial Yin of my joining Comicgasm is accompanied by some sad news. By now you must’ve heard of Harvey Pekar’s passing. Pekar is quite influential not just to me and my outlook and the way I write, but  the entire comic book world. So I guess it’s fitting that I finish this entry with a small tribute to Harvey Pekar, one of the champions of independent comic books.

The Fifty Peso Ninja

OK RJ today is COMIC RELEASE DAY and if you don’t post today, blame Magic the Gathering and his vacation trip to Lala Land – the place where love is true and unfortunately, the ONLY thing.

We’ve all been there folks! And thus I’m free to do soem risky moves today. So instead of doing my usual Green Lantern Geoff Johns-ass kissing, I’ll write about what happened to me this morning. (uh-oh).

Arrived in the office, with tons of work to do I log on to YM and notice that an OLD friend from high school was online – Lico Reloj. I remember conducting a “Comics and Photography” workshop to make an excuse to get high school women of Assumption Antipolo from their stern nunnery and into our influence. Needless to say we really enjoyed the hell out of it.

But like all crooked things I do, I am completely honest about it. Lico IS a comic man – a highly underrated comic writer and artist at that from the Philippines, now living in the U.S. I’m trying to justify why we got high school girls from AA. Besides, I was high school at that time. He has graciously linked me to a webcomic with a character based upon himself – THE FIFTY PESO NINJA.

As you guys will have to read and comment on the comic, I assure you that it is AWESOME. It mixes wit, Japanese manga con hielo tastefully topped off with a Filipino flavor. It has action, comedy and boobies. I swear. The FPN is a hero to us geeks everywhere.

I swear guys not all that glitters is downloaded from Kaskus. Check out this webcomic and once you finish reading it, we’ll have a rally to bug Lico to make more issues.

CHECK OUT THE FIFTY PESO NINJA HERE!!! —> http://www.fiftypesoninja.smackjeeves.com

FYI – Fifty Peso Ninja was nominated for BEST WEBCOMIC. yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!

My Metro Comic Con Experience: Stages of Melodrama

by RJ on Aug.11, 2009, under Anime, Comicpeoples, Events, Real Life stuff, Toys

I know you’re all expecting my Best and Worst Cosplay post so you can ogle at scantily clad teenagers, but I’m experiencing Internet problems(read: forgot to pay the bills again) so I made this post while leeching wifi from various establishments.

So here’s the MCC experience from the defective eyes of yours truly:

DAY 1

Shock and Horror

You reach the 5th floor of SM Megamall and the first thing you see is a man dressed as a gothic lolita. ’nuff said. Near the ticket booth are animu characters that you don’t recognize; no complaints about them, manga = comics after all. And then you realize half of them are actually men(I am not homophobic, except maybe in cons). Oh, and more gothic lolitas.

Rage and Despair

You enter the megatrade hall, expecting to see your favorite superheroes. Only to find.. You’ve guessed it, more gothic lolitas! You try your best to look for any western/local comic book characters but end up seeing a man in a school girl outfit.

Comics N Stuff: New Comic Book Shop at The Fort

by RJ on Aug.03, 2009, under Comicpeoples, Events, News

comics n stuff

I was looking for belts with my cousin at the Fort area when we stumbled onto this new comic book store at Market Market. Comics N Stuff, a sister store to Comic-Odyssey, isn’t even a month old. The place isn’t fully stocked yet and have very little back issues, but their latest issues are complete. This means I don’t have to go to Galle  or G4 to get my weekly fix! YAYZ!

PS. I know, my 5800′s camera sucks.
