Snap Judgment: Bunker of the Teen Titans
by Carl on Sep.28, 2011, under DC, DCnU
So one of the new characters to join the Teen Titans is Bunker, a flamboyantly gay Mexican teenager with forcefield powers. All diehard Teen Titan fans I’ve talked to have come to the same conclusion when they heard the announcement about him:
He’s doomed.
It’s not a judgment on him – we have yet to see him in action – rather, it’s a judgment on both his writer and the company publishing him.
Scott Lobdell has not shown mature handling of sexuality lately (see: Starfire in Red Hood and the Outlaws and the ensuing controversy) which is a far cry from his great work in the 90s handling Generation X and Alpha Flight. Now, I know that writing straight female sexuality and gay male sexuality are very different things, and some people can fail miserably at one while acing the other (Hi, Judd Winick!) but the Starfire issue, combined with his comments in interviews where he’s bragging about how diverse his cast of Teen Titans is and how Bunker is going to be flamboyantly gay, because that’s how gay people are, does not give me much hope.
(Also, is it just me, or did his interview feel like he’s taking potshots at Marvel’s teen gay superheroes – Wiccan, Hulkling, Karolina Dean, Anole, etc. – who while being gay, aren’t stereotypes?) (continue reading…)
Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in Full Costume!
by Ade Magnaye on Sep.25, 2011, under DC, Movies
Remember the last time Anne Hathaway’s pictures as Catwoman were leaked? I was pretty much disappointed because it was just a girl in a leather outfit riding a bike. There was nothing special about those pictures, really. I am ever so glad to see new The Dark Knight Rises set pictures of Anne Hathaway dressed up as Catwoman – and this time she has the mask and cat ears!
If you’re wondering why the cat ears look stupid, I’m guessing those are actually the goggles we saw in the first set of pictures before, and they’re just sitting on her head.
Now excuse me, because I’ll be in my bunk.
What do you guys think?

Action Comics #1 [Review]
by Ade Magnaye on Sep.09, 2011, under DC, Reviews, Superman
Last week RJ and I reviewed the comic that introduced the new DC Universe to readers old and new alike, Justice League #1. We were, in a word, underwhelmed. Immensely. To introduce the DCnU in a comic that was just banter and nothing else was nothing short of disastrous, in our humble comic book blogger opinion.

Action Comics #1 was how they should have introduced the new universe. Aside from the obvious parallels – the original Action Comics #1 in 1938 introduced readers to an exciting new character, Superman, who would be the world’s first super hero – the relaunch introduces a radically different Superman, one who takes a more proactive approach towards social justice as opposed to the “big blue boy scout” that we all know and love. Superman Finds a New Arch-Enemy
by Ade Magnaye on Sep.05, 2011, under batman, DC, filler, Superman
We’ve often talked of sexual tension in the comics we read, mostly because your Comicgasm editors are such immature man-children. We would never let anything vaguely resembling homosexual relations between your favorite superheroes pass for a cheap joke. You’re welcome.
Anyway, one of the greatest comic book bromances rivalries of all time would be between Superman and Lex Luthor. However, it can get pretty old and stale, and you wouldn’t fault Superman for looking somewhere else. Somewhere like General Zod’s direction. Also, there’s the reboot. [/cheap shot]
