Oh lookee. The Comicgasm monkeys have been all busy getting drunk and we’ve totally forgotten this little blog of ours. Oh well. Time to make the reviews then.
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #2

I’ve mostly avoided the Ultimate Universe, but after Loeb did his best to destroy said universe, I thought, well, it can only get better after this.
And oh man, I am so in love with Ultimate Spider-Man. The dialogue, even though it falls into the trap of Bendis-ian everyone sounds like Peter Parker, even Aunt May, is still great. It’s witty and it makes me laugh at the right moments. Action scenes are also great, especially if the art is so manga-ish you just can’t help but be drawn in. And I’m no manga fan. Speaking of the art, Melonheaded Spidey is growing on me.
And goth girl Gwen Stacy is cute, isn’t she?

Justice League: Cry For Justice #3
Ugh. Why do I even bother. This issue, while majorly better than the last two ones, still is a boring, boring, boooooring comic. It’s all WHINE WHINE SOMEBODY DIED WHINE WHINE WHINE WHINE GREEN ARROW IS BEING A BIGGER ASS THAN USUAL OMG WE WANT JUSTICE.
Okay, it’s got awesome scenes like a gorilla battling robots midair while flying over the ocean (that made me giggle), but the entire premise of the book left me cold. If this is about Hal looking for justice because Bruce and J’onn died, how come he’s going after random villains instead of, you know, Libra?
Also, where the fuck is Libra?
Seriously, if this is going to set the direction of the main JLA comic in the future, I’m worried.

Also, Hal, even though Batman is DEAAAAAAAAAAAD, you’re not supposed to talk about his civilian identity in front of the enemy. How the heck am I supposed to believe that you’re an awesome JL leader?
Batman #690

So it’s another issue of Dick Grayson fighting crime in Gotham, taking over Bruce’s mantle and trying to show the world just how different he is from OMG ANGST Bruce.
It’s not a bad comic. And for something written by Winick, this is actually a pretty good issue. My main beef here is that there’s nothing particularly groundbreaking about Winick’s run. Which is a shame, because former sidekicks taking over the mantle of their former mentors has been fertile ground for great stories that would go beyond awesome. Stories of these sort have shown us the best comics can give us (see: Mark Waid & Geoff Johns’ Flash run, Morrison’s Batman & Robin, Ed Brubaker’s Captain America). To put it bluntly, Winick’s Batman run falls flat.
I’m telling you, this is not by any stretch a bad comic, but there is huge potential in the ground Winick is treading on and he is not utilizing it. Putting Dick in situations that Bruce normally gets in and showing just how different they would react gets old by the third issue of the run.
Come on, give us something better.
Detective Comics #856
Yeah, yeah, I know this was from last week, but I was going through some weird existential crisis and I totally forgot to write about everyone’s favorite lipstick goth lesbian cameltoe queen, Batwoman!

Okay, this issue starts off with a werewolf and b-movie horror characters saving a dying Batwoman from the clutches of a deranged woman who spouts off Lewis Carroll quotes at every turn.
Then Batwoman’s alter-ego, Kate Kane shows up at a charity ball, dressed in a tuxedo, and flirts with another tuxedo-lesbian, much to the annoyance of Kate’s stepmother.
Then the big twist in the end.
I really can’t say how much I am loving Detective Comics right now. The story may be your run-of-the-mill pulp-inspired comic book schlock, but the art, ohmigod the beautiful sexually-charged haunting art, makes the difference.
Also, The Question back-up features Renee kicking her way out of a car’s submerged trunk and breaking a huge guy’s joints.
If you know me, you’d realize that seeing The Question beat up a larger opponent is all that is needed to make me happy.
