Green Lantern First Flight: Something is Missing

Well I actually did a review on Green Lantern First Flight back in my personal blog. Thing is, I wanted to redo it here in less painful detail. My personal blog is volatile: go there to experience hell.
First Flight was good but the main idea that I get to is this: people are going to miss out in the movie what makes Green Lantern such a good series to follow in the comic. (Written by the awesome Geoff Johns.)
First Flight did the superpowers and the killer action part of the movie VERY WELL. However, superpowers & killer action by themselves do NOT make a superhero story awesome. Batman does not have superpowers – but The Dark Knight was awesome. Justice League: The New Frontier barely featured the Green Lantern for 15 minutes – but the Hal Jordan was 10x more awesome here than in First Flight.
What makes a superhero movie awesome? I’d like to think it is characterization. Meaning, the Superhero has to feel like at the very least: a real person. Robert Downey Jr. did this very well as Iron Man. Edward Norton had what Eric Bana didn’t as The Hulk. It is why Colin Farrel‘s Bullseye vastly outshined Ben Affleck‘s Daredevil.
Hal Jordan in First Flight? Let’s just say I’m hoping Ryan Reynolds reads Geoff Johns’ (awesome) take on GL.
I wish that DC Animated at least left the part of “overcoming one’s greatest fears” as the essence of a Green Lantern story. I hope the upcoming Green Lantern Movie does not take too much off First Flight – otherwise it will be just fireworks and eye-candy for us modern pyromaniac moviegoers. (OOOH LOOK AT THE GREEN LIGHTS! PREEEETTY…)
P.S. – I’m still buying the DVD. So I give this a 60%!
