Hello again ladies and gents.  Arkade here.  This is my second post…. ever. Lol.  Anyways, back to business then.  With the Blackest Night arc happening within the world of DC, it is only prudent to try and get a better view of the situation at hand.  This post will be the first of a series of posts focusing on the multiple lantern corps that have been shown in the Green Lantern series.  Again, like my first post, i will focus on strengths and weaknesses of each corps according to my personal opinion (Note: I gladly welcome the views of others with regards to each corps. Nothing better than a hearty debate/discussion).  Also, for lack of a better name, i will use the colors for the corps names… (only Sinestro had the balls to name an entire corps after himself).  I hope that Nhojleif will forgive my intrusion into his personal green lantern space.  Anyways, here we go then:

Overview:

Being in the middle of the emotional spectrum, willpower has a certain connection to all other emotions (meaning, for any of the other power sources to be manipulated, a certain amount of willpower must still be utilized).  Its corps, the Green Lantern Corps, is one of the oldest, if not THE oldest, corps in existence (I can’t say for certain.  The contenders for the oldest corps at the moment are the orange [since Larfleeze became Agent Orange because of his role involving the heist of Parallax, which resided in the Green Lantern Central Power Battery from its creation] and the indigo corps [since there has been very little information to go about with regards to them]).  Their job sounds simple, serve and protect the denizens of their respective sectors (in simpler terms, they’re universal cops).  Each member is trained to be able to access his/her own powers to the utmost extent, being able to use their willpower to create constructs designed by their own creative imaginations, with each construct being specifically designed for the task at hand.  Thanks to this, the members of the GLC are all very capable of doing their jobs.

Personal Opinions:

Right now, this corps is one of the weakest, on its own.  With their guardians being dead, incapacitated, or crazy as hell, and with their ranks being made up mostly by rookies due to the constant amount of battles, there is no one left to lead them properly.  Also, based on the recent comics, a great number of their ranks (specifically the dead ones) have all turned into black lanterns. What’s more, these black lanterns are all on Oa, the seat of green lantern power, along with the guardian of the black lanterns, Scar (who is now covering the other guardians with black puke, effectively stopping them from interfering in any way).   The only way for them to survive now is to ally themselves to other corps (with the best choice being the Blue Lantern Corps, not only since their powers complement one another’s perfectly [Green allows blue rings to create constructs, and blue recharges the green rings beyond 100%], but also the fact that the blue guardians [Ganthet and Sayd] were former Guardians of the Universe themselves), and overcome their fears of fighting lanterns that were once part of their own ranks.

Overview:

Although this corps is relatively new, Parallax, the living embodiment of fear (their version of Ion), has existed ever since.  Even before the creation of the corps, Parallax played a pivotal role in the Green Lantern storyline by possessing Hal Jordan.  Its eventual release, along with Sinestro (the greatest renegade green lantern), created the first mentions of other forms of power.  Sinestro explained, that he never knew that his own ring was actually using fear, as an energy source, until Parallax showed him.

After Jordan’s rebirth, Sinestro started recruiting others to his corps; others who, like himself, have the ability to instil fear into the hearts of others (on earth, even Batman [who uses fear as a tool to fight crime] was almost recruited into the Sinestro Corps.  Parallax also mentioned that Batman was a “believer”, a worshipper of fear), all for the sake of his own dictatorial beliefs.

Personal Opinions:

Ah… my favourite corps… One cannot deny how cool Sinestro is.  His mindset, with regards to the extremism of the guardians with their rules and regulations, has their merits.  His views with regards to law and order also have its points. However, his belief that a state must be governed with an iron fist is just plain and simple power mongering.

Anyway, back the corps.  The Sinestro Corps is now the weakest of the known corps.  The loss of its guardian, its heralds, and its power embodiment is bad enough, but now, split into two factions (the Sinestro Faction and the Mongul Faction), it can barely hold together, let alone fight another corps.  The best they can do at the moment is to pull their ranks together before doing anything else.  As the saying goes, “a boat cannot have two captains”…

Okay, thats the end for this one. Will post the next one after a couple of days (I hope).  Next, we have the two extreme sides of the emotional spectrum; The Red Lantern Corps, and the Violet Lantern Corps.  See Ya!!!
