Lantern Corps Part 3

Ok. Hello again guys and gals. Here’s the third portion of the Lantern corps series of posts.  I’m sorry for the uber late post.  Apparently, work + writing = no progress whatsoever.  But now, I was able to finally find the time to finish this.  Anyways, the corps to be tackled here are the Orange lanterns and the Blue lanterns (yes Fiel, I know you’ve been waiting for this…).  So, without further ado, here we go.

Orange Lantern Corps

Emotion Based Power Source:

Avarice

Color:

Orange

Guardian/s:

Uncertain

Living Embodiment of Power:

Unknown

Oath:

Unknown/none (although it could possibly be either “MINE MINE MINE” or “eh?[said in blackest night 5 during an oath recital])

Overview:

One of the older corps in existence, the original orange lantern, Larfleeze (also known as Agent Orange), has been in ownership of the Orange Central Power Battery since before the creation of the Green Lantern Corps (as seen in Larfleeze’s story to Hal Jordan in GL v4 #41).  He isolated himself in the vega system, feasting himself on anything and anyone that passes within the system.

His corps is made up of constructs, created by stealing the identities of those whom he has killed.  So, the more he has kills, the greater his corps will be.  He has also shown that, as a singular (upon reabsorbing all the constructs back into his ring), he is extremely powerful, with his ring power level reaching 7839% and, more recently, 100,000%.

Larfleeze, with his extreme and insatiable hunger, then set his sights on Odym, the home base of the blue lantern corps with the hope that owning the blue light will finally satisfy him (recent comics, however, show that it was due to his desire to have his own guardian).  He then joins in an unlikely band of ringslingers as the “One of” the sole representatives of his corps (Luthor is vying for that position as well….) to fight the black lanterns.

Personal Opinions:

MINE! MINE! MINE! MINE!  Sigh… greed can change men in so many ways… but not as much as this guy.  Larfleeze is the epitome of greed, wanting anything and everything he sets his eyes on (especially shiny things).  But, with his insatiable hunger, comes a million tons of power.  His ring power levels are beyond any level any other ring can muster.  This is most likely due to the fact that his central power battery (which is the size of a personal power battery) is being permanently bearhugged by him.   Frankly, i’m surprised he hasn’t tried eating the damn thing (… or has he…).

Ok, in terms of the knitty gritty, the orange lantern is quite impressive in terms of power and ability.  His method of absorbing the identities of those he kills and recreating them as part of his corps, literally makes him a one man army, able to construct backups when needed and, when confronted in person, absorbs all the energy, granting him an overwhelming power boost (strangely enough, I cant remember him utilizing all that energy in creating anything else special…. still, a lantern with a 100,000% ring charge is still scary as hell).

A problem arises though with regards to the avarice felt by the owner of the ring and battery;  that is, he/she feels the compulsive need to want and own everything.  Larfleeze has it somewhat under control to the point that he can make decisions on helping others as long as the benefits are good for him as well.  Luthor, on the other hand, who has no prior experience, lost all control, ending up fighting everyone and wanting everything.  So, in essence, the orange lantern’s greatest weakness is his own insatiable hunger.

So, to sum up the orange lanterns, i’ll make it as simple as possible… they are greedy ass bastards who don’t know how much power they already wield.  But hey, you gotta hand it to agent orange… he knows what he wants… simply, everything.

Blue Lantern Corps:

Emotion Based Power Source:

Hope

Color:

Blue

Guardian/s:

Ganthet and Sayd

Living Embodiment of Power:

Unknown

Oath:

In Fearful day, In Raging Night

With Strong Hearts Full, our Souls Ignite

When all seems Lost, in the War of Light

Look to the Stars, for Hope Burns Bright!

Overview:

This lantern corps is one of the younger lantern corps.  Upon their banishment, Ganthet and Sayd devoted themselves to spreading the blue light of hope to the universe.  Starting with sector one, then working their way forward, they chose their ring-slingers after a long and tedious process (usually takes 3 days).  The first of their ring bearers was Saint Walker, who helped Hal Jordan and the other Green Lanterns upon the first attack of the Red Lantern Corps.  He is then followed by Warth, Brother Hymn, Sister Mercy, and more recently, Barry Allen.  This brings the total number of blue lanterns to 5, making them the smallest corps in terms of numbers of members (the orange lantern corps technically has more members.  The only contender for the title of smallest is the White Lantern Corps, which only consists of Sinestro at the moment.).  Now allied with the other corps, they all fight against the black lanterns with the hope of eradicating Nekron and bringing peace to the universe once more.

Personal Opinions:

Okay, before anything, i would like to apologize to Fiel for the next statement… I have one statement that can pretty much sum up what blue lanterns are.  “Galactic hippies addicted to dope.”  Think of it, they have this favourite saying “All will be well” that pretty much equates to “Peace dude” and when near a green lantern (their form of dope) they get powered up.  See my point?

Ok. Now, to the more technical points.  The Blue lanterns are extremely powerful.  Abilities they have include impossible feats like reversing a star’s life cycle from pre-supernova to young and blue.  Also, they have the ability to charge the Green Lantern rings within their vicinity to levels above 200% and drain Yellow Lantern rings.  Another interesting ability is that of being able to purge the infection of the Red Lantern ring.  Since the Red Lantern ring replaces the bearer’s blood with liquid fire and the heart with itself, this is a truly spectacular feat.

To the downside, the ring’s construct abilities cannot be controlled by the user.  It instead reacts to the target’s memories and emotions.  Another is Ganthet and Sayd’s recruiting process.  Although really thorough, it is slow as freaking hell.  With only one lantern at maximum created every three days and with 3600 sectors, they are really taking their sweet time.  Also, the greatest downside is that the ring only works when around a Green Lantern…  in other words, no green lantern, bye bye hippie.

All in all, the blue lantern is powerful, but all the downsides make this the weakest corps “by itself”.  With other corps, though, it is a powerhouse, even with their small numbers.

Ok people. That’s it for these two.  Next up is black and indigo.  Gotta finish em ASAP… COMMENT!!!!

It makes perfect sense that hope is nothing without will.

No offense taken David – I believe the ability to hope is only sincere when you overcome fear in the first place. :)

Better finish up – BN is at a close!
