Okay. Blackest Night. What a ride.

So I just finished reading Blackest Night 8, and what can I say? It’s fucking awesome. It has all these moments that both made me geekgasm and cringe. Dialogue is still typical Geoff Johns: cliche-riddled but somehow it works. But in the end it’s so fucking awesome I totally forgot about the book’s flaws and I just sat and took it all in.

Okay then. Now on to the SPOILER-FILLED PART OF THE REVIEW (don’t read any further if you haven’t read BN #8):

There are actually a lot of things I don’t like about Blackest Night: first would be the spread with the White Lantern Corps attacking Black Hand. White Lantern Corps? Really? Also, I thought Nekron was dealt with quite easily here. And just like previous Blackest Night installments, we end up trying to navigate through an overly-dense issue, with all sorts of ideas crammed in one page. It’s overwhelming at times, but when we get to the part where almost everyone in the DCU who died within the last four years is resurrected (DOUBLE CENTERFOLD SPREAD FUCK YEAH) it was worth it.

Speaking of resurrections, fuck yeah Aquaman is back, and so is Martian Manhunter! I’m not too hot with the return of Hawkman, Hawkgirl and Maxwell Lord though. Thank goodness Johns showed some restraint and didn’t resurrect Blue Beetle and Ralph and Sue Dibny. I love those three characters, but it’s better off that they stay dead. Also seeing Flash’s OMG SUE AND RALPH ARE NOT BACK I’M GOING TO CRY face in the end made it worth it.

In the end, we see that finally Death Is Death in the DCU again. And it looks like DC is really going to abandon it’s grim-and-gritty 80′s roots and finally be a brighter place. About damn time, I say. Comics are going to be fun again, and a bright future is- WAIT, THEY DID WHAT IN CRY FOR JUSTICE?! HOW THE FUCK ARE THEY GOING TO FIT THAT IN BRIGHTEST DAY?!
