More DC Relaunch Commentary, Plus Disbelief Over The Teen Titans Redesign

by on Jun.09, 2011, under DC, Events

I know RJ already ranted a bit about this with his last post, but I was planning to bitch about this, so I don’t care. We all know that the DC Universe is going to be relaunched this September, following the conclusion of the yawn-tastic crossover event Flashpoint.

Everything is going to be relaunched with new number 1′s, and our favorite heroes will have their origins and histories changed. The extent of the changes are unknown – we don’t know which previous stories will be invalidated. Aside from the continuity changes, our heroes are also sporting new costumes with designs spearheaded by none other than Jim Lee.

Similar to the narrative shakeup DC made in 1985, Crisis on Infinite Earths, this move is supposed to free DC from the shackles of continuity and give them a fresh slate for better storytelling. The original Crisis’ aftermath was pretty good. It gave us a fresh take on superheroes, like Byrne’s amazing version of Superman and Frank Miller’s timeless Batman: Year One. It was really worth angering all those fans, because EVERYTHING TURNED OUT BETTER THAN EXPECTED. (continue reading…)

Geoff Johns and Jim Lee relaunch Justice League

by on Jun.01, 2011, under DC, Events

Hey Comicgasm readers, I’ve got a bit of a confession to make: I kinda lost interest in comics, except for a few titles like Amazing Spider-Man, Justice League: Generation Lost, and the Bat-verse after Blackest Night. Now, BN was by no means a bad crossover, but it failed to live up to the hype it built for itself. And DC seems to have fallen into a weird cycle of rebooting the universe on a frequent basis since Infinite Crisis. Sure, they’re not reboots per se, but we get to see huge retcons, up to the point where huge parts of a character’s history were changed on regularly (see: Superman, Flash, Batman). You’d think after Final Crisis (which was awesome and I will fight you if you say otherwise) they’re going to stop it already.

Guess what? They’ve done it again.

According to USA Today, the entire DC line will be relaunched after Flashpoint, and everything – I mean EVERYTHING – will be renumbered to #1. I actually don’t have a problem with that, because resetting comics to #1 has become standard industry practice at this point. I’m kind of weirded out at the fact that it looks like DC is going to hit the reset button and completely clean the slate. (continue reading…)

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is the gayest shit ever

by on Sep.23, 2009, under batman, Movies, Reviews, Superman

So I just finished watching Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and I totally wish I could say it rocked on every possible level. I mean, I’m the easiest-to-please comic book fan in the world. Just look at me loving the shit out of Final Crisis while the entire internet exploded in anger and demanded for Grant Morrison’s head on a silver platter. Well, fuck you all, I still love Final Crisis that I want to impregnate it and shit.

But yeah, again. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies disappointed me on so many levels I don’t even know where to start. So let me just rattle off whatever I liked and didn’t like. And be warned, there will be spoilers. (continue reading…)

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Graphic Novel

by on Aug.06, 2009, under Indie, News, WTF

Pride and Prejudice and ZombiesKnow what makes everything better? Zombies. Just look at Blackest Night. It’s the best event that DC has ever come up with (and we’re just past issue #1, folks!), and that’s saying a lot, since DC just finished Infinite Crisis, Sinestro Corps War, and Final Crisis (YES I LOVED FINAL CRISIS FUCK YOU HATERS).

You know what other things zombies can turn into something awesome? Jane Austen. I swear, if it wasn’t for Keira Knightley I would’ve dozed off to that Pride and Prejudice movie. What. It was a date.

Anyway, there was this little book called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies that came out a while back. I haven’t read it yet, but Lauren said that it was pretty fucking awesome. The thing is, it’s been ages since I’ve read something without pretty pictures in it (fuck you, comics!) so I haven’t picked up any book in ages.

Guess what: there’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Graphic Novel being developed right now. It’s going to be written by Tony Lee (X-Men, Spider-Man) and drawn by Cliff Richards (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). So I really can’t wait for this so I can get my Victorian-era zombie-killing action. Seriously, zombies and ninjas and women in weird puffy dresses. You can’t go wrong with that.

Come on, tell me you’re not excited. Really now.
