Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man Costume: First Official Photo!

by on Jan.14, 2011, under Marvel, Movies

I’ve been pretty ambivalent about Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. I really thought that the guy was great in The Social Network, and admittedly, he looks a lot more like Peter Parker than Tobey Maguire ever did. But for some reason I never really cared about him getting the titular role in Marc Webb’s reboot of everyone’s favorite web-slinger.

That is, until today.

From Slashfilm: the first official photo of Andrew Garfield in the Spider-Man suit.

Two things: I love the fact that the new costume gets rid of the raised webbing from the Sam Raimi movies. That was the one thing that irked me from the otherwise faithful costume from the first series. Weirdly, this new costume modifies the comic book costume a bit – I can see where they’ve changed up some of the classic patterns. (continue reading…)

Thor Teaser Trailer!

by on Dec.11, 2010, under Marvel, Movies

I have a feeling that the upcoming and eagerly anticipated Thor film will suck, or at its best will be an inoffensive comic book adaptation packaged in a summer movie, but it’s not stopping me from getting excited by all the Thor news coming my way. Here’s the new trailer of the movie, and I like it so far, even though I can see all the bad reviews coming a mile away.

It definitely is no Iron Man, but I’m hoping it won’t end up in Ghost Rider territory. What do you think?

Chris Evans as Captain America – First Official Image, Batman 3 is The Dark Knight Rises!

by on Oct.28, 2010, under batman, DC, Marvel, Movies, News

For those curious as to what Chris Evans – formerly Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm – looks like as Captain America, Entertainment Weekly’s giving us a first look. You have to give Marvel Studios’ costume and makeup people credit here – he doesn’t look like a douchebag fratboy.

Aside from the duckface, hes pretty much what I thought Steve Rogers would look like. The modifications they made to the classic costume looks great too – it’s something that would work in the real world, while staying true to how it looks like in the comics. I just wonder why they decided to make the shield all rugged with those bullet marks, though. Anyway, there’s a great interview with Chris Evans on landing the Captain America on EW’s website! Zack Snyder is Superman Director!

by on Oct.05, 2010, under DC, Movies, News

A few days back, we were speculating as to who Chris Nolan was going to pick for the director of the next Superman film out of a list of candidates that included Tony Scott, Matt Reeves, Jonathan Liebesman, Duncan Jones, and Darren Aronofsky. My money was on Duncan Jones, because Moon was a fantastic and minimalistic sci-fi film and I loved it to bits. Imagine my surprise when Zack Snyder, director of 300 and Watchmen, was announced as director of the new Superman reboot.

From Deadline:

Zack Snyder has been chosen to direct  the new installment of Superman for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. Snyder was on a short list of directors that I recently revealed met with the studio as well as producers Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas. Other choices at the time included helmers Tony Scott, Matt Reeves, Jonathan Liebesman, and Duncan Jones. I think Snyder is an inspired choice. He is a cornerstone filmmaker for Warner Bros., a visual stylist whose efforts for the studio include 300, Watchmen, and the upcoming Sucker Punch.

Personally, I loved Watchmen and 300, and I wish I could say that I am glad Snyder landed the gig. But I’m not. Snyder’s movies haven’t been exactly subtle – they’re an mix of color, explosions, screaming, CGI, abs and boobs. I guess they’re going for an action-oriented film after Superman Returns, the film focusing on Superman abandoning his pregnant girlfriend and subsequently trying to get back with her after five years and a fiancé, bombed. I wonder why.

I don’t hate Chris Nolan’s choice. I’m just iffy with it. With him producing and collaborating with David S. Goyer on a script, this might turn out to be a good thing. In the meantime, you can expect us Comicgasm editors to wait for news and see if the guy they cast as Superman also has a huge package that needs to be reduced via CGI. No, wait.

New All-Star Superman Animated Movie Teaser Trailer

by on Sep.24, 2010, under DC, Movies, News

I don’t think that there’s anyone here who doesn’t like Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman. The 12-issue miniseries was very, very close to perfect, giving us the idealized version of Superman and it showed us how everyone since after John Byrne got the character all wrong.

When DC announced that they are making an Original Animated Movie adaption of All-Star Superman, I was a little apprehensive even though Dwayne McDuffie was writing it. Don’t get me wrong – I am very, very excited to see an animated All-Star Superman movie, but there’s just way too many things to screw up with a near-perfect comic book.

Now we have the first teaser trailer for All-Star Superman, and even though I have a few gripes with it, which I will discuss later, it makes me all the more excited for the movie. Trailer after the jump!
