Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters!

by on May.28, 2011, under DC, Green Lantern

We don’t usually do video games here on Comicgasm, but this is a Green Lantern game. Tied in with the upcoming movie that I’m actually looking forward to watching (despite the sucky costume), and here we go. It’s called Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, and it looks pretty exciting.

Here’s the press release:

Inspired by the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures’ superhero feature film Green Lantern, Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters soars onto game consoles this summer, extending the theatrical experience of one of DC Entertainment’s most popular superheroes. Players will use the most powerful weapon in the universe, the Green Lantern Power Ring, to build an array of weapons from green energy to defeat the Manhunters – an evil android race bent on destroying the Green Lantern Corps.

Packed with intergalactic missions, alien androids and out-of-this-world combat, Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is an action-adventure videogame that delivers the Green Lantern experience right into the hands of gamers.

The game is launching on June 7, 2011, and is available for xBox 360, PS3, Wii, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS. Quick, like the Facebook page to get more news about this awesome new video game as it happens! They post new screenshots every Thursday, by the way!

New Green Lantern Trailer!

by on May.05, 2011, under DC, Green Lantern, Movies

Oh man, oh man, oh man. The new Green Lantern trailer is out, and i’m supposed to write a nice filler paragraph here explaining how excited I am for the new movie, also how much I hate Hal Jordan’s costume because really, fuck that shit that costume sucks. Anyway here’s the part where I’ll try to do a random segue so I can actually finish writing and just get on to the video, because, really it’s that awesome. I haven’t had decent sleep for a week already so please forgive my meta blogging jokes.

Finally: HAL JORDAN/SENESTRO SWORDFIGHT! KILLOWOG TALKING! MORE OF THAT MYSTERIOUS YELLOW CLOUD!

What do YOU think?

Green Lantern WonderCon Footage is all sorts of amazing

by on Apr.03, 2011, under DC, Green Lantern, Movies

The Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan was on my most-anticipated films a couple of years back. However, by the time they showed  us a preview of that horrible, horrible costume, and with the very lackluster trailer, my anticipation for this film waned down to a barely-audible “meh.” Green Lantern’s a favorite character of mine and it feels like the filmmakers were doing their best to strip from the movie everything that made the comic so great.

And I felt that way, until I saw this 4-minute video showing footage from WonderCon. This short clip totally restored my faith in my the movie. I’ll let the footage speak for itself.

Opening in 3D and 2D theaters on June 17, the Martin Campbell-directed action adventure stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, Tim Robbins, Temuera Morrison, Jay O. Sanders, Taika Waititi, Jon Tenney and Geoffrey Rush.

The costume still sucks, though.

What do you think of this new footage?

R.I.P. Michael Gough (1916-2011)

by on Mar.18, 2011, under Movies, News

We all know what kind of horrible abortions of cinema the original Batman movie franchise turned out when Joel Schumacher took over the series. But Batman Forever and Batman & Robin weren’t all that bad though – if there was one bright spot in those horrible excuses to sell gaudy toys, it’s Michael Gough’s portrayal of Batman’s ever-loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

I’m afraid I’m not familiar with Michael Gough’s other works, but he remains to be one of my favorite interpretations of Alfred. Sure, he may not be as awesome as Michael Caine’s version, but for a guy to come out of the two horrible Schumacher Batman movies and come out dignified is an amazing feat by itself.

Good night, sweet prince. You will be missed.

All-Star Superman Review

by on Feb.13, 2011, under DC, Movies, Superman

I haven’t really been shy of telling everyone how much I love Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s epic miniseries chronicling the Man of Steel’s final days, All-Star Superman. There’s really no doubt about it: ASSM is the best Superman story ever, bar none. It takes all that is great about Superman (and his many incarnations and versions) and condenses it into twelve amazing issues. Morrison and Quitely cut to the heart of the character and present it in a way nobody else can. It’s no secret that we at Comicgasm are Grant Morrison fanboys, but what the hell.

However, All-Star Superman is such a dense work that I really find it hard to imagine how anyone can translate the story into a cohesive movie, much less retain everything that makes it so great. I’m a huge fan of Dwayne McDuffie, but even with him writing the adaptation’s script and with Bruce Timm as producer I wasn’t so sure. ASSM was 12 issues of Superman thinking of ways to solve problems, being nice and kind, and generally avoiding punching stuff unless the situation really calls for it. That would be a pretty boring way to pad out a movie. So color me pleasantly surprised when the animated adaptation of All-Star Superman delivered. (continue reading…)
