The Dark Knight gets a new look in “Batman: The Return” and “Batman Inc.”

There’s absolutely no words to describe how awesomed I was when Grant Morrison first announced that Bruce Wayne is going to start franchising Batman and is going to turn it into a brand in “Batman Inc.". Seriously, it doesn’t matter if you hate or love Morrison’s run on Batman, I think we can all agree that he did more for the character for the last 20 years over any other writer. And Batman as a brand is the logical (or illogical) next step.

In the new series, Batman will create a team of super-heroes who will be wearing his colors. The team will include Dick Grayson, Knight and Squire, El Gaucho and eight others. Again, Morrison says, “it’s all about the branding.”

Incidentally, this new era of Batman also means that we get a costume change:

I don’t need to explain how much I absolutely loathe the yellow oval on Batman’s chest. Although I grew up watching the Adam West TV show and reading Bronze Age Batman comics where he is always depicted with the yellow oval and symbol on his chest, I really prefer the oval-less symbol. It gives me the impression that Batman is a much more badass character that way.

But if we are going to usher in a new era, I guess a change in the logo is needed. The yellow oval was brought in because DC needed to differentiate the Silver Age Batman from the silly sci-fi hijinks of the Golden Age. I don’t exactly have any idea why they reverted to the oval-less logo in the mid 2000’s, but it was an era where Batman became less of a fun character and writers did nothing but to emphasize that he was clearly an unlikeable and insane person. Morrison’s run brought back the fun in reading Batman: he brought back the silliness of the Golden and Silver Age, and a new logo is apparently needed.

But, again, it’s “all about the branding.” We might see the bat-symbol play a significant role in “Batman, Inc.” and it makes sense. Well, as much as Morrison makes sense. Which is not very often. But it’s a glorious kind of confusion.

I’m just glad that they finally got rid of the briefs-on-top-of-the-pants thing, though.

But being an urban myth has been removed from the mythos since before Infinite Crisis.
