The New Justice League of America: Wait, WTF?

Welcome back! Don't forget to subscribe to the Comicgasm RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Starting issue 38, a new Justice League of America will be formed. The team will be formed of Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Green Arrow, the Atom, Batman, Mon-El, Donna Troy, Cyborg, Doctor Light, Starfire, Congorilla, and the Guardian.

Okay, what? This is probably the least iconic JLA I’ve ever seen. I totally loved the JLA lineup during the Morrison era, and understandably they had to give that lineup a rest. I also liked the Meltzer lineup as well, although I’m disappointed they disbanded that group way before they could be given great stories.

Bringing in Dick as Batman makes sense, and Donna and Mon-El too. Somebody has to fill in for the big 3 in their absence. And finally, The Atom is back. I missed seeing him in the pages of JLA. As for Green Arrow, it’s about damn time. Doctor Light’s a great addition to the team for those who remember the JLI days.

But… Cyborg? Guardian? Congorilla? WTF? Where is Black Canary? After she broke down after trying to keep the JLA together I was hoping she’d redeem herself and take over as Chairwoman again. Also, where’s Vixen? She tried to keep the JLA together in the absence of the big names. Where’s Barry or Wally?

I like Hal Jordan, but the dude’s got his own book. Can John Stewart be the JLA Lantern? He’s more of an asset to the JLA than Hal, mainly because he’s a better team player. Also, he’s badass.

The trinity fill-ins aren’t senior enough to lead (probably with the exception of Dick). The other seniors aren’t really known leaders. Can you imagine Hal taking orders from Mon-El? I didn’t think so. Can you imagine Hal coming up with a half-assed plan and leading the JLA to their doom? Yep. (As far as I’m concerned, only Geoff Johns is allowed to write Hal Jordan.)

I wonder who’s the chairperson. My money’s on Dick.

This seems to be a weak lineup, and with James Robinson helming the book (Cry For Justice is a FUCKING MESS, you guys) and with Mark Bagley providing the art duties (I like the guy, but I don’t feel he draws them iconic enough; look at Hal, he freaking looks like Power Ring of Earth-3 there) I’m not too happy with the future of the JLA.

  • Hm, so the main guys of the JLA were all Teen Titans? I guess that's *kinda* interesting - they were never great as the Teen Titans (for me anyway) so the question here is whether they'll continue being not so great or whether they'll improve. I do like Donna Troy though. Ollie is in the team but not Dinah? That's just weird.

Things haven't been great (and yes Cry For Justice was a mess and terribly gay) but I'm this close to giving James Robinson a lifetime pass for Starman. Man, that was a good book.
  • Christ. I hope it's not Dick. I love him as much as the next gal (ahem ahem), but leading JLA? Pass.
  • I think Dick will probably keep with what Bruce originally did for the previous line-up: decline when asked to join, though for reasons different from Bruce's. Or as Terry McGuiness did in the Batman Beyond/JL two-part crossover aired on TV years ago when Supes asked if he wanted to join the team. Or blah blah blah. And yeah, the lineup is kinda weak, with Dick being the most qualified to be there.

I want to see Dick punching Hal.

I know they have an uncle-nephew relationship but I still want it to happen.
  • I want to see Dickslapping Hal.

    Wait, I don't.

"My money's on Dick." Me, too, just on a very different level.
