The comic world(hell, even the rest of the world) is going ga-ga over the latest film adaption of a Moore masterpiece. Fans and casual viewers alike gave mixed reviews; purist fans despising it, laid back fans loving it, confuzzled people who haven’t read the comic book going “BUH?”, and then there’s the people who only went there to see Dr. Manhattan’s Blue Dong. We(the fans) can nitpick all we want, that is what we do after all; but whatever your take on film is, you can’t argue that it was damn entertaining. When I Gibbons drugs and abducts Moore and tapes his eyes open to watch the film in the near future, Moore will have a hard on.

I don’t think I’ve said SPACE WANG enough. Never enough. So before we move on, let’s try to get this out of my system, shall we? Above is a comparison between the film adaptation and the graphic novel. The scene where Jon Osterman first fully appears as Dr. Manhattan. Notice that the movie dong is larger than the comic dong. Fascinating, isn’t it? Yes, I just tricked you into staring at two blue penises.
What really made me squirm like a fangirl were the various Easter Eggs placed in the movie. These are the more prominent ones that will easily be caught be comic geeks. I’ll need to watch the film again, or wait for the Director’s Cut DVD to look for the rest of the Easter Eggs.

Aside from the blatant Last Supper homage, notice that Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice were on screen together for a grand total of like five seconds and they still managed to include their gay anyway.

Ozymandias’ sexuality was not even hinted in the story, but he does have a “BOYS” folder in his private computer.
Above is the scene where Hollis Mason, the first Nite Owl punching a bad guy. Ordinary, yes? Do click the image for a higher resolution. You’ll see that they’re outside the Gotham Opera House, Mason has just saved Thomas and Martha Wayne(she’s even wearing her pearls). One of the plays displayed was “Die Fledermaus” which literally translates to “The Bat”. To make sure that we won’t miss it, they added several Batman posters at the well. Fucking awesome.
The rest will be in list form coz I’m too lazy to find screenshots for every single one of them:
- The number ‘300‘ appears twice in the movie. The first one being the room number 3001 losing the last digit, the second one was during the climax one of the television screens is playing “300 Spartans” along with “The Day the Earth Stood Still“.
- Ozymandias’ machine was called Operation S.Q.U.I.D.(I was too busy screaming “WHERE’S THE GOD DAMN VAGINA-SQUID!?” to notice this, thank you internet!)
- Before the explosion, you can see the older Bernie(newspaper stand guy) holding a paper that says “The Veidt Method,” referencing a newspaper that can be seen on the pages where you see the genetically engineered squid monster in the comic. SQUID! WOOO! (thank you again, internet!)
- Apparently, Dan owns a copy of Watchmen that can be seen in his basement.
- After dropping off the people they saved from the fire, Silk Specter is shown putting paper coffee cups back into a shelf on board Archie.
- The American flag on the Comedian’s coffin had 51 stars(effect of the altered Vietnam war).
- There is a Spartan Helmet inside Adrian’s office among his other collections.
- Laurie’s toy snow globe was seen on top of their television during a flashback.
- One of the Top Knots(goons) Dan and Laurie fought in the alley had an upside down anarchy symbol printed on his shirt, a homage to V for Vendetta.
- Lesbian porn playing in one of Adrian’s monitors along with Rambo II and other classic stuff.
- When Rorschach exploded, his blood and remains is similar to the Hiroshima Lovers Silhouette grafitti.(I thought it was just a random ink blot reference.)
- A woman can be heard saying “I’m so glad I ordered the four-legged chicken.” in the scene where Dan and Laurie were having dinner.
- Neil Armstrong says “Good luck, Mr. Gorsky.” in the opening credits.
- Adrian hanging out with the Village People and David Bowie(played by J.R. Killigrew) in his Ziggy Stardust attire in the intro.
- A lot fucking more!
Without a doubt, this is one of the best Comic-to-Screen adaptations I’ve ever seen. And this is the CUT version! We want the Director’s Cut!
A little survey before I end this post:
1. Rate the film. F being an epic failure , A+ being perfect in every way.
2. Have you read the Graphic Novel? If not, fucking read it already!
3. Did you enjoy the movie? Explain briefly.
PS. BUY THE DAMN DVD! DO IT!
PSPS. BUY THE GRAPHIC NOVEL! DOOO EEET!

1. C+. It was alright, but there was some really bad dialogue and acting. Also, many things in the novel that easily could of been put in were replaced with gratuitous violence.

A+ damn it! It’s one of the best comic adaptations I’ve ever seen and ugh. Zack Snyder actually respected the material he worked with.

3. Somewhat. At times it felt like I was watching a school concert based on the book. Zack Snyder is a bit of a light-weight director. In the Dark Knight, that last sequence when Gordon tells his son about Batman gives me chills everytime I watch it. It’s such an emphatic sequence. Same goes for the sequence in V for Vendetta when V knocks over the domino’s. There are a couple of scenes in Watchmen that try to create that type of drama/emphasis yet fail. Same goes for 300. And the constant slow-mo kept getting on my nerves.[Reply]
