I’m probably one of those people who didn’t exactly like Wonder Woman’s iconic costume. To put it nicely, but it was… horrible. She was a Greek goddess living on Themyscira, and she goes off into man’s world wearing a bikini with the star-spangled banner plastered over it. She looks like she came from Sarah Palin’s wet dreams or something. Also, let the mental image of Sarah Palin having wet dreams incapacitate you with horror for a moment.

Now, thanks to writer J. Michael Strazincksi Stracin Stra Straczynski and DC Co-Publisher Jim Lee, everyone’s favorite Amazonian Princess is getting a revamped origin and a brand new costume:

The Gods, for reasons of their own but which may have something to with their survival and perhaps the survival of Earth itself, have changed the timeline. In the new timeline, years ago the Gods removed their protection from Paradise Island, and left it vulnerable to attack. And attacked it was. Led by a dark figure, a veritable army descended upon the Island, equipped with weapons that could kill even the Amazons. Outgunned, doomed, Hippolyta gave over her three-year-old daughter to a handful of guardians who spirited her away as Hippolyta led one last desperate battle against the forces that had come to destroy all she had created. In that final battle, she and most of the Amazons were killed, though some managed to escape.

It’s now nearly twenty years later. Diana has been raised in an urban setting, but with a foot in both worlds. She has little or no memory of the other timeline. She knows only what she’s been told by those who raised her On the run, hunted, she must try to survive, help the other refugee Amazons escape the army that is still after them, discover who destroyed Paradise Island and why…and if the timeline can be corrected or not. She also does not yet have access to her full powers, but will be gaining them as she goes. Along the way, she will face a range of enemies — human and otherwise — who we have not seen before.

And if you check out the internet, people are really hating the shit out of the costume. They’re saying things like they shouldn’t change what doesn’t need to be changed, the costume really worked, how the hell are they going to see up Wonder Woman’s ass now, you know, all that jazz. I’m not exactly a fan of the new costume – it’s a little similar to Black Canary’s if you ask me – but here’s what I think: Wonder Woman’s due for a costume change anyway.

The old costume’s horrible if you ask me. And before you go on saying “It’s a classic, it must be good!” hear me out. Superman and Captain America both have ugly costumes, but they stuck because it’s what people associate with the character the most. Over time, the little tweaks on the costumes made them look a little less gaudy, and, well, Supes and Cap actually ended up looking dignified in their threads over time. As for Wonder Woman, her shorts/bikini just seemed to be going a bit higher every decade, and all those tweaks just gave us more excuses to give her ass shots:

Just to set the record straight guys, I appreciate the ass-shot as any other guy. But since we’re talking about a character’s integrity here…

Anyway, I’m not exactly happy with the new costume, but it’s a step in the right direction. I like the designs on the bracelets, the belt and the little star details on the jacket. Oh, speaking of the jacket, WTF it’s not longer the 90’s! And the choker. And make the logo bigger.
